Castle of La Brède

On this estate, Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède and Montesquieu, author of “Lettres Persanes” and “L’Esprit des Lois” was born on January 18, 1689. Built from the 14th century on the ruins of an older construction, the castle was redesigned from the Renaissance onwards. It has kept its character of fortress, atypical by its polygonal shape that is reflected in the water of the wide moat that surrounds it. Montesquieu stayed there regularly, finding, in this haven of peace, the happiness of a simple life and an environment conducive to reflection and writing.
