The Citadel was built between <strong>1685<\/strong> and <strong>1689<\/strong> by the military engineer <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Ferry<\/strong>. In <strong>2009<\/strong>, the Citadel of Blaye was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List<\/p>\n\n<p>The Citadel is an impressive sight, rising above the vineyards and fields that surround it. In addition, the walls of the fortress are about <strong>20 meters high<\/strong> and <strong>25 hectares <\/strong>. Inside the walls there are gardens, moats and a casemate where cannons were once stored. Today, the Citadel is open to the public and is a popular tourist destination<\/p>\n\n<h2>History of the Citadel<\/h2>\n\n<p>Indeed, the construction of the Citadel began in <strong>1685<\/strong> under the direction of <strong>Vauban<\/strong>. He was a renowned military engineer who also designed many other fortresses along the French borders. Indeed, you can explore the bastions and ramparts. Admire the view of Blaye and the surrounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourisme-gironde.fr\/en\/visits\/what-to-visit-around-bordeaux\/\">vineyards<\/a> from the top of the walls. Take a walk in the flowered and wooded gardens.
